OSTERVILLE
– The Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills (COMM) fire department reports they received a call from a citizen on Dowses Beach in Osterville around 12:10 p.m. reporting a piece of “military ordinance” that appeared to have washed up on the beach.

COMM FD and Barnstable PD responded to investigate.  The area was cordoned off and the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad responded to the scene.  The State Police stated it was a phosphorous flare used by the military.  The tube was approximately 18” long.

Due to the possibility of phosphorous still inside the tube, the bomb squad transported the item to the Town of Barnstable Landfill in Marstons Mills to render the device safe.  The flare was detonated shortly after 3 p.m.
