WAREHAM – One person was injured and remains in custody at a hospital after a small explosion in Wareham. Firefighters responded to the scene on Aunt Maryville Lane around noon. The Mass State Police Bomb Squad and the Mass Department of Fire Services Joint Hazard Incident Response Team were requested and were on the scene late into the evening.
The suspect was later identified as 50-year-old Mark W. Halpin of Wareham who was charged with possession of explosive devices and possession of materials used to make them. He was held on $15,000 bail pending his arraignment on Monday in Wareham District Court.
In a statement, Mass State Police advised that Friday afternoon, their investigators from the Bomb Squad and Crime Scene Services responded to a chemical explosion at a residence in Wareham.
The individual believed to be responsible for the explosion suffered non-life threatening injuries. When he attempted to flee the scene, State Police apprehended him and facilitated his transport via to a local hospital where he remains in custody.
State Police Bomb Technicians, the Department of Fire Services’ Joint Hazard Incident Response Team, and Wareham officials are assessing the Wareham residence for potential hazards to first responders. The scene is secure and there is no immediate public safety threat.
