Updated: Second victim of Falmouth crash passes away

Update: Falmouth Police report that sadly, the passenger involved in Thursday’s fatal motor vehicle crash, 17-year-old Owen Higgins has also succumbed to his injuries and died Friday afternoon with his family by his side at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island.

On Thursday evening at approximately 6:42 p.m., members of the Falmouth Police Department, Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office and Falmouth Fire Rescue Department responded to a one car motor vehicle crash on Thomas B. Landers Rd., in the area of Geggatt Rd. Once on scene, emergency personnel found a Honda Civic in the woods with two occupants trapped inside. Both occupants were Falmouth High School students. Unfortunately, the operator, James Lavin, 17, of East Falmouth  succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash. The passenger, Owen Higgins, also 17 of East Falmouth, was extricated from the vehicle by rescue personnel and later flown to a Rhode Island trauma hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Falmouth Police Department.
