PROVINCETOWN – The Barnstable County Dive Team was activated to Provincetown shortly before 3 PM Friday. Several people reportedly got caught in a rip current at the far North end of Herring Cove Beach. Two people were rescued by the Provincetown Fire Marine Unit. A woman was unaccounted for prompting the dive team activation. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was also assisting in the search.
About 4:15 PM it was reported the victim was pulled from the water and rushed by boat to the Coast Guard Station Provincetown. Their condition was not immediately known.
From the Town of Provincetown: At approximately 3:00 PM Friday, public safety agencies responded to a report of three people in distress after being caught in a possible rip current off Herring Cove near Hatches Harbor.
A coordinated search and rescue effort was immediately launched involving Provincetown Fire, Police, Harbormaster, the National Park Service, U.S. Coast Guard, Massachusetts State Police, and other responding agencies.
All three individuals were recovered. Two were brought to safety and are reported to be in stable condition, while the third was recovered in critical condition and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by the Provincetown Fire Department.
We are incredibly grateful to our first responders and partner agencies who worked quickly and collaboratively under challenging conditions to locate and recover all three individuals. Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s incident, as well as their families and loved ones.
