New details: Multiple units respond to large brush fire in Sandwich

SANDWICH – Multiple fire units including brush breakers were called to a 2nd alarm brush fire in Sandwich shortly before 12:30 PM Tuesday. Initial reports said about 4 acres were burning on Carelton Drive off Route 6A.

From Sandwich Fire: On Tuesday at 12:22 PM, the Sandwich Fire Department responded to a report of a brush fire in the area of 10 Carleton Dr. in East Sandwich. The smoke was spotted by both the Sandwich and Barnstable Fire Towers which are staffed by Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Forest Fire control personnel. The fire towers are staffed to spot and quickly notify of any large areas of smoke.

On arrival, crews discovered an acre of brush burning and spreading rapidly in the wooded areas between Carleton Drive and Scorton Marsh Road.

A 2nd alarm Brush Fire response was requested bringing additional resources from Mass DCR Forest Fire Control, Joint Base Cape Cod , West Barnstable Fire, Bourne Fire, Mashpee Fire, and Centerville-Osterville -Marstons Mills Fire. The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department responded to provide drone overflight coverage of the fire. The fire was contained within 30 minutes and kept to 2 acres with no structures impacted.

A total of 28 firefighters responded to the scene. The Falmouth, Bourne, and Barnstable Fire Departments provided station  coverage during the incident.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire was a permit fire that went out of control.
