Yarmouth Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos
YARMOUTH – After more than 40 years serving in the Yarmouth Police Department, Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos is retiring.
The announcement was made Tuesday morning in a statement from Chief Frank Frederickson.
“Deputy Xiarhos, who is loved by so many, has had a remarkable career. He has been a tireless worker and always looks for the best in people. His dynamic and caring personality has served him well as a true ‘Community Police Officer.’ Although he has been an amazing police officer, he is perhaps better known to many for personally helping so many who have needed help on personal matters,” said Frederickson.
Xiarhos was born and raised in New Bedford and is an alumni of Anna Maria College, Northeastern University, and Cape Cod Community College where he majored in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement. He joined the Yarmouth Police Department as a Summer Officer in 1978 and in 1979 was hired as a full time officer.
It’s expected that Xiarhos will formally announce a run for the Republican nomination for the 5th Barnstable State Representative District after his retirement, which becomes effective on December 8th.
Current Republican State Representative Randy Hunt is not running for re-election.
Xiarhos has served in many wide ranging positions throughout his career including police officer, patrol officer, detective, school resource officer, patrol sergeant, lieutenant, patrol force commander, and Deputy Chief of Police. He was also heavily involved in many “Community Policing” activities and was a large contributor to helping the Yarmouth Police Department receive the prestigious 2012 and 1016 New England Community Policing Award.
Xiarhos has attended numerous specialized training courses and is a graduate of the Babson College Command Training Course and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar.
He is the recipient of 23 various police department awards and decorations including Officer of the Year, Yarmouth Area Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year, Rotary Club of Yarmouth Vocational Service Award, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Officer of the Year, and the Barnstable County Human Rights Commission Rosenthal Award.
The Yarmouth Selectmen were expected to acknowledge Deputy Xiarhos with a proclamation during their weekly meeting Tuesday night.
“Deputy Xiarhos has left a wonderful legacy that will never be duplicated. His commitment and contributions to the community and beyond cannot be thanked enough. The men and women of the Yarmouth Police Department wish him the very best and hope his retirement is what he wants it to be,” said Frederickson.
