Updated: One person injured after gunfire erupts in broad daylight on Main Street in Hyannis



HYANNIS – A large police presence was on crowded Main Street in Hyannis after a brazen broad daylight barrage of gunfire reportedly rang out sometime after 4 PM Sunday. An officer on patrol heard the shots and called for additional units in the area of High School Road. According to reports, one person suffered a gunshot wound to their leg and was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital.

Statement from Barnstable Police: At approximately 4:30 PM on Sunday June 25th 2023, Barnstable Police responded to the area of Main St. and High School Rd. in Hyannis for reported gun shots. Upon arrival officers located a male that had been shot in the legs and they began medical treatment on the victim.

The victim was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Hyannis Fire Department Rescue Personnel and then was later flown to a Boston area hospital by Med Flight for further treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

In addition, other responding patrol units investigating the incident located a damaged vehicle a short distance away on High School Rd. that had apparently fled the scene and crashed into an uninvolved vehicle. The passengers in the uninvolved vehicle were not injured in the crash.

Based on the initial investigation, this was not an act of random violence. The case remains under investigation by the Barnstable Police Department patrol and detective units. If you have any information regarding the incident, please call 508-775-0387.
