  1. It’s a wonder that this doesn’t happen more often. I have seen many cyclists riding way too fast, zipping between pedestrians. I have also seen tourists walking down the street, not paying attention or looking around before turning into a store. They have also been observed just stopping in the middle of the street to talk. We all have to share the road so walkers should be cognizant of their surroundings and look before straying and bicyclists should slow down and “ring their bell” when passing through large crowds.

  2. During the height of the season here, Commercial street is a dangerous place for anyone on foot and on bicycle. The road (Even Though there are sidewalks) is just one giant sidewalk. With cars able to travel through bikes zipping around and clueless tourists on their phones, or walking in groups side by side its no wonder more people are not injured honestly. People just need to be more vigilant while roaming the streets here.

  3. Slow down!,,,if you’re on a bike, this happens way too frequently. People walking do not expect fast bikes to be whizzing by!

    • Jeannette de Beauvoir says

Bicycles have as much right to be on the street as do any other vehicles; people are third in line in terms of rights. Many if not most of the bicycles are being ridden between jobs. Yes: they should be careful; but they shouldn’t be responsible for the sheer stupidity of people on foot assuming that the street was created and exists uniquely for them.

      • Jeannette….let use your answer in relation to a cyclist getting hit by a car… “cyclist are second in terms of rights, Drivers shouldn’t be responsible for the sheer stupidity of people on bikes”

Sometimes its best if you have nothing nice to say…then don’t say anything at all. It was a little girl who was knocked down and injuried

      • Jeannette.. Really? Bicycles are supposed to adhere to the rules same as cars. Speed limit, stop signs, DUI, and at one point there was talk of one way travel on commercial st as well.

  4. Peter Warnock says

Bicycles need to pay attention to the LAWS of the road. Slow Down. Commercial St. is not your personal speed way to and from jobs. Commercial St has been a walking street far longer than it has been a biking street. You wouldn’t ride a bike through a carnival fairway at that speed, don’t do it on Commercial Street. If this was a driver of a car we would all be blaming the driver, well guess what, bicyclist are DRIVERS Too. SLOW DOWN. PERIOD.

  5. Peter Warnock says

And NO, pedestrians are NOT 3rd in line. They are number ONE.

  6. There is a simple solution for cyclists determined to get to their destinations faster….use Bradford Street!!!!!

  7. Rules of the road don’t include going the wrong way down one way street and bikes go the wrong way all the time…

  8. Stacy, two-way bike traffic on Commercial Street has been legal for many, many years now. Look it up before you start proclaiming what the “rules of the road” are.

That said, there are a few cyclists who make life difficult and more dangerous for everyone on Commercial Street by speeding and darting in and out of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The police really need to crack down on the bad apples.

  9. 351 towns in the State and Provincetown does NOT enforce State Law in bike riders following the same direction, ONE WAY , as cars. Perfect recipe for people getting hurt. Nor do people practice safety. Wear protection……. A bike helmet.

  10. Its especially hard for the little girl and her family…the collision broke both bones in her leg and she is now facing surgery and 6 months of rehab:(

  11. I saw this bike rider before this accident took place. I did not see this accident and did not hear about it ’til now while viewing this article. This has to have been the same teenage kid who was riding as fast as he could down Commercial St. as if in some video game. This rider was definitely out to maim someone! I witnessed him run into a woman. But, this woman was unharmed. He either hit this girl after he continued or he went on another hell ride afterwards. I stopped into a tavern to eat and missed the accident apparently. Don’t take this kid’s side. He was not a responsible bike rider. He was on a mission to TERRORIZE!

  12. Sarah Copeland says

My granddaughter has experienced a huge amount of pain since the accident. She had surgery to put a plate in her leg. No child should have to go through this. We have heard nothing from the bicylist.

  13. I was with my daughter shopping in a store and heard the little girl scream!!! Ran out to see her laying in the st infront of the store, others were yelling at the person who hit her saying how they had to swerve out of his way to avoid being hit!!! My heart goes out to the little girl and her family!!
