BOURNE – From the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: Construction has begun on a solar canopy that will shelter the parking lots at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.
Funded by a Leading by Example Solar Decarbonization Grant of $1,070,685 from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER), the canopy will provide 25 percent of the electricity at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and generate annual savings of $110,000 to $130,000 for 20 years or more.
Completion is projected in early 2027.
“This project will save the taxpayers money and shrink our carbon footprint,” said Sheriff Donna D. Buckley. “We are excited to see it take shape, and grateful to the state Department of Energy Resources for the funding.”
The project is expected to generate approximately 784,167 kWh of electricity annually, which will be fully used on site. Over its lifetime, the canopy is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,612 metric tons.
The project is being designed, developed, and installed by Solect Energy, a Massachusetts-based solar and energy storage company, through the PowerOptions Solar and Energy Storage Program.
