DENNIS –  Dennis town officials have issued a list of regulations reminding people about the community’s beach regulations.

It follows an incident on July 4th in which several teenagers were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Witnesses at Mayflower Beach said the teens appeared to be engaging in sexual activity in the water.

A large crowd had gathered, with some cheering and yelling, before Dennis Police arrived. A  person with the Twitter account @rendpiece captured the scene when police arrived.

The teens were between the ages of 18 and 19.

During an appearance in Orleans District Court on Wednesday, a judge said the four would not be arraigned for six months, pending their participation in a Youthful Diversion Program designed for first-time offenders aged 18-21 who are charged with certain minor offenses, as an alternate to the court process.

“These young adults participate in appropriate counseling and education as well as community service projects.  Upon successful completion of the program, the District Attorney’s Office will not prosecute the case and there will be no record of the offense,” according to a statement from the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office.

Prompted by the incident, Dennis issued a reminder about their beach regulations:

No alcoholic beverages will be permitted on the Town’s beaches or in the Town’s parking areas at ANY TIME.

No glass containers or bottles shall be allowed on the beach or in the parking areas at ANY TIME.

No smoking will be permitted on the beaches or in the beach parking areas at ANY TIME.

To help ensure that Town residents and visitors have a safe and positive experience at our Town Beaches, to protect the public safety and to curtail unlawful underage drinking, the Town of Dennis Beach Department staff members will be conducting searches of coolers and other containers in order to enforce the “no alcoholic beverages” and “no glass containers” beach department regulations.

Signs are also installed at various locations which state “No Alcohol allowed on town property. All containers subject to search”. All town beaches will be subject to searches for alcohol and glass containers.

As people approach the public entrances to the beaches, besides the posted signs, they will be advised that their container/cooler is subject to search for alcohol and glass containers and will be advised if they don’t want their container searched they can remove it from town property, but they can’t bring it on the beach.

The police department will also be conducting additional patrols at town beaches to ensure that residents and visitors comply with the beach regulations at all times.
