New details: Hazmat crews called to Cape Cod Academy in Osterville

OSTERVILLE – Hazardous materials technicians were requested to the Cape Cod Academy on Osterville/West Barnstable Road in Osterville about 8:15 AM Thursday. Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills (COMM) fire called for the response after an unknown odor was detected in the building. All students have been relocated to a safe area and no injuries were reported.

Officials reportedly tracked the issue down to a battery for an emergency generator.

From COMM Fire: At approximately 8:11 AMm. Wednesday morning, the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department responded to Cape Cod Academy at 50 Osterville West Barnstable Road for reports of an unknown odor inside the building.

Upon arrival, crews initiated a Tier 1 Hazardous Materials response as a precaution. All students and staff were safely evacuated, and additional resources, including the Massachusetts State HazMat Team, were requested to assist with the investigation.

The odor was later determined to be caused by an off-gassing battery from an older appliance located in a basement utility room. The battery was safely removed, and the affected area was ventilated.

No injuries were reported, and the incident was resolved without further issue.
