PROVINCETOWN – A mulch fire at the Provincetown Transfer Station caused a smoky odor over parts of the town early Wednesday morning. Police began receiving several calls about the smoke sometime after 5 a.m. Flames were coming off the top of the pile when firefighters arrived and they positioned two trucks so deck guns could be used to knock down the fire. Crews had to run hose lines from a hydrant on Race Point Road forcing that road to be closed until about 7:30 a.m. DPW crews used front end loaders to pull the pile apart so hot spots could be completely put out.
