Fromm Falmouth Fire-Rescue: On Tuesday, March 24, at 2:43 PM, Falmouth Fire Rescue responded to a unique emergency at 387 Jones Road: an 11-year-old yellow lab named Tessa had fallen into a 12-foot-deep sinkhole.

The two-foot-wide shaft opened into a large, undermined area caused by hidden water drainage. Due to the high risk of collapse and the dangers of the confined space, the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team was called in to assist.

Crews stabilized the surface and determined that a traditional entry was too dangerous for firefighters. Instead, they opted for a surface rescue. After more than two hours of tactical adjustments—and a little help from some pepperoni—Tessa was successfully pulled to safety at 5:01 PM. She was uninjured and happily celebrated her rescue by finishing the remaining treats. We are grateful that her owner called 911 immediately rather than attempting a dangerous solo rescue.
