Erratic operation, crash result in drunk driving arrest in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH – From Yarmouth Police: Yarmouth Police received multiple 911 calls on Thursday afternoon reporting a pickup truck was driving erratically in the area of Old Main Street and South Street. Callers reported the vehicle was unable to maintain its lane and nearly struck other vehicles head-on. The truck continued to drive erratically on South Shore Drive, passing busy beach parking lots and numerous pedestrians walking the sidewalks. Moments later, the truck struck a utility pole on Pine Grove Road resulting in heavy front-end damage and causing the pole to crack and lean.

Officers arrived at the crash and saw a bystander attempting to restrain the driver who had attempted to walk away from the scene. Officers detained the driver and observed numerous signs of intoxication. Further investigation led to the arrest of Michael Volpe, 47 of West Yarmouth.

Volpe was transported to the Yarmouth Police Department and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Marked Lanes Violation. He was arraigned at Barnstable District Court on Friday.
