Flash Flood Watch issued as power restoration and cleanup continues


CAPE COD – Eversource continues to work on scattered power outages across the Cape after last night’s storms that prompted tornado warnings on parts of the Cape. Wellfleet appears hardest hit with 542 customers still without power. Wellfleet Police issued a statement:

“Power outage – estimated power return by 5:00 pm

Last night we had a Tornado warning across the cape. We had heavy rain, lightning and winds, although we are not aware of any confirmed Tornadoes anywhere on the cape.

Wellfleet did have a lightning strike of the Eversource power substation about 11:00 pm on Monday. This resulted in about 900 people and businesses losing power. Eversource has restored power to approximately 350 people leaving approximately 550 without power. Estimated retime for the power to be restored is about 5:00 pm this evening. They are working getting the parts and all to correct the problem as quick as they can.

People without power can get text updates of when the power will be returned and you can report an outage via a text. You need your Eversource account number to to register your phone. Please follow the prompts in the photo below.

The National Weather Service may go to view damage in Harwich where there were a number of trees brought down. Now another area of heavy showers is approaching this morning prompting the issuance of a Flash Flood Watch:

…FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 2 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON…

The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for portions of southeastern Massachusetts
and Rhode Island, including the following areas, in
southeastern Massachusetts, Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes,
Nantucket, and Plymouth. In Rhode Island, Block Island,
Bristol, Kent, Newport, Providence, and Washington.

* Until 2 PM EDT this afternoon

* Another round of heavy rain showers and embedded thunderstorms
will move into Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts early
this morning. Localized pockets of torrential rainfall may
result in 1 to 2 inches of rain in just an hour in a few
locations. The result will be the potential for localized flash
flooding, especially in urbanized centers. The threat for heavy
rain showers and flooding should exit the Cape and Islands
early this afternoon.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Sandwich Fire issued a statement about the storm and house fire: On July 22, 2019 at approximately 2145 hrs, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning with tornado warning. At approximately 2230 hrs, Sandwich Emergency Communications Center received calls for a building fire – house struck by lightning at 3 Viking Lane in South Sandwich.

On arrival units found an attic fire with extension into the second floor. Chief Burke ordered a working fire assignment bringing all Sandwich Fire apparatus plus an Engine from Mashpee Fire Department to the scene. The fire was extinguished within 90 minutes and damage was extensive to the roof-attic and 2nd floor area. There were no injuries and the occupants were displaced from their home.

While fighting the Viking Lane fire, 3 additional lighting strike calls into houses came in for 17 Evsun Drive, 49 Moon Compass Drive and 22 Pickerel Way and were handled by Deputy Chief McMahon and units from West Barnstable Fire Department and Joint Base Fire Department. No additional fires were reported and the Sandwich Building and Electrical Inspectors were checking all the properties effected. Damage from the Viking Lane fire is estimated at $75,000.

Cotuit Fire Department provided ambulance coverage for the town during the incidents and COMM Fire Department assisted with an Engine for the multiple calls.
