Great Streets construction continues in Hyannis on new roundabout; project to make Main St. two-way

HYANNIS – Construction continues on the Great Streets Downtown Hyannis project, with crews working on drainage improvements, underground utilities and pedestrian upgrades as the town prepares for major changes to downtown traffic patterns.

According to the Town of Barnstable Department of Public Works, construction during the week of October 26 through October 30 is focused on several locations, including the busy Six-Points intersection, where a new roundabout is planned.

The Six-Points intersection, which connects South Street, Old Colony Road and Ocean Street, is undergoing drainage and excavation work, along with the removal of sail poles and installation of underground conduits.

The work is part of the infrastructure improvements needed before construction of the new roundabout can move forward.

Additional drainage construction is taking place at the intersection of Main Street and South Street.

Crews are also installing accessible curb ramps at various locations along Main Street as part of the project’s effort to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout downtown Hyannis.

Construction is scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Town officials say intermittent lane closures are expected, but no full road closures are anticipated during the current phase of work.

More Construction Expected Through Fall And Winter

The Department of Public Works says underground infrastructure improvements and utility relocations will continue throughout the fall and into the winter.

As work progresses, some sections of downtown roadways may temporarily have gravel surfaces before final paving is completed.

The town also emphasized that the existing traffic signals at the Six-Points intersection will remain operational until the new roadway configuration is ready for use.

Officials say the construction schedule remains subject to weather conditions and other factors encountered during the project.

Major Traffic Changes Planned For Downtown Hyannis

The construction is part of a larger effort to redesign how vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists move through downtown Hyannis.

Under the Great Streets plan, sections of Main Street, South Street, Ocean Street and Old Colony Road that currently operate as one-way streets will be converted to two-way traffic.

The changes are intended to improve traffic circulation, reduce congestion and make the downtown area safer and more accessible.

According to the town’s official project information, the two-way conversion is expected to be completed no earlier than the summer of 2027.

The project also includes several other improvements:

Construction of a new roundabout at Six-Points to replace the existing intersection configuration.

Installation of bicycle lanes along portions of North Street and South Street.

Construction of shared-use paths and sidewalks along portions of North Street and Old Colony Road.

Improvements to pedestrian crossings, including shorter crossing distances and high-visibility markings.

Reconfiguration of the Main Street and South Street intersection to create a new public park.

Additional on-street parking at the western end of Main Street.

Town officials say existing parking along Main Street will be retained, with additional spaces planned along some side streets.

The town also plans to narrow certain travel lanes to encourage slower vehicle speeds.

The Great Streets project has been in development since 2022, with public meetings, design presentations and input from downtown businesses and residents helping shape the final plans.

The project is being funded through a combination of state and federal funding sources.

Town Providing Weekly Construction Updates

Recognizing the potential impact on downtown businesses, residents and visitors, Barnstable officials say they will continue providing weekly construction updates throughout the project.

The updates will identify where crews are working, anticipated traffic impacts and any changes to construction schedules.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling through downtown Hyannis, watch for construction workers and equipment, and allow additional travel time.

Additional information, including construction plans and updates, is available on the town’s Great Streets Downtown Hyannis project website.

Questions concerning traffic impacts or access during construction can be directed to the Barnstable Department of Public Works at 508-790-6400.
