HYANNIS — A major capital improvement project at the Hyannis Transportation Center is set to get underway next month, bringing new bus bays, a passenger canopy and other upgrades designed to improve traffic flow and the experience for people using the regional transit system.
The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) said construction is scheduled to begin September 8 and is expected to reach substantial completion in December.
The project will include the construction of four new bus bay pull-outs, improvements to a section of Transportation Avenue and installation of a new passenger canopy. The canopy will provide shelter for passengers waiting for CCRTA buses as well as those being dropped off at the transportation center.
CCRTA officials said the improvements are intended to improve passenger flow and boarding operations while also providing greater protection from rain, snow and other weather conditions.
The project will also include improvements intended to enhance the appearance of the transportation center campus, which serves as an important gateway to downtown Hyannis.
“This project is about making the Hyannis Transportation Center work better for the people who rely on it every day,” CCRTA Administrator John Kennedy said. “We are excited to see the new bus bays and canopy take shape and to give our passengers a better experience from the moment they arrive.”
Transportation Avenue closure
One of the most significant impacts during construction will be the closure of a portion of Transportation Avenue.
For most of the construction period, the section of Transportation Avenue between Main Street/Center Street and the CCRTA’s west parking lot will be closed.
The closure will not affect access to the transportation center from Route 28 or Paula George Way, and CCRTA said bus and transit services will continue operating throughout construction.
The agency said it will provide regular information to passengers, employees, neighboring businesses and the public as the project progresses. Weekly construction updates will begin once work gets underway.
CCRTA officials said the investment is intended to provide long-term improvements to one of the Cape’s key transportation hubs.
The agency is asking the public for patience and cooperation while construction is underway.
