MASHPEE – Mashpee firefighters were called to a house fire shortly before 11 AM Thursday. Heavy smoke was billowing from the structure on Valley Road when crews arrived prompting a call for mutual aid.
Firefighters took a defensive stance after reportedly determining there were hoarding conditions that made it unsafe to enter the structure. At the height of the fire, the roof collapsed. Officials were able to determine no one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
From Mashpee Fire: The Mashpee Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 8 Valley Road on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at approximately 10:47 AM.
Mashpee Police officers arrived first on scene and reported smoke coming from the residence. Upon arrival, fire crews observed heavy smoke conditions and fire extending from the rear of the single-family home. A working fire assignment was requested, bringing additional mutual aid resources to the scene. Due to fire conditions and structural compromise, crews operated in a defensive mode to bring the fire under control and limit further damage. The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes and was contained to the structure of origin.
at the time of the incident, and one resident has been displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing needs.
Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Falmouth Fire Rescue Department, Cotuit Fire Department, and Sandwich Fire Department. The COMM Fire Department and Joint Base Cape Cod provided station coverage during the incident. A total of 30 firefighters responded in various operational and support roles. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
The residence sustained significant damage and has been deemed uninhabitable. No occupants were home
The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Mashpee Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
