MASHPEE – From Mashpee Natural Resources: At approximately 1855 hours on August 7, 2026, Mashpee Dispatch received a report of a 12-foot aluminum vessel taking on water with one aboard off South Cape Beach in Mashpee. At the time of the incident, sea conditions consisted of approximately 2–3 foot seas.
Senior Assistant Harbormaster Hunter Bohnenberger was dispatched to the incident and immediately responded aboard Marine 1 from the area of Waquoit Bay.
Upon arriving on scene, Bohnenberger located the vessel and its operator in the water. Bohnenberger pulled the operator from the water and safely brought him aboard Marine 1.
Following the rescue, the vessel was secured at South Cape Beach for recovery, preventing it from completely sinking. Bohnenberger confirmed that the operator had no apparent medical needs and subsequently transported him to Edwards Boat Yard.
The August 7 response demonstrates exactly why the Mashpee Department of Natural Resources maintains trained personnel on the water and stays ready to respond throughout the boating season. Our personnel routinely train for incidents such as this so when an emergency occurs, they are prepared to respond quickly, professionally, and effectively—even in challenging conditions.
