DENNIS – Motorists traveling along the Mid-Cape Highway during overnight hours should be prepared for possible delays as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) continues vegetation removal work along Route 6.
According to an informational bulletin shared by the Dennis Police Department, crews are clearing trees and other vegetation from the highway median and shoulders along a stretch of Route 6 extending from the Barnstable area to the Orleans Rotary.
The work is being performed by Northern Tree Service and is scheduled to take place Sunday through Thursday nights, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Crews are initially concentrating on removing vegetation from the median in both directions between mile markers 64 and 78, roughly corresponding to the section of highway between the former Exits 5 and 9, now numbered Exits 65 and 78.
Once the median work is completed, crews will return to clear vegetation along the highway shoulders between mile markers 64 and 90, extending the project eastward toward the Orleans Rotary.
MassDOT said the work will require temporary lane closures, with traffic management measures in place to protect motorists and construction crews.
However, the highway will remain open to traffic throughout the project.
The vegetation removal is part of ongoing highway maintenance efforts. Clearing overgrown trees and brush along highway medians and shoulders can help improve visibility, maintain roadside clearance and reduce potential hazards for motorists.
The project is expected to continue until the winter construction shutdown, although the exact completion date has not been announced.
All work is weather permitting, and schedules may change because of adverse conditions or emergency situations.
MassDOT is advising motorists traveling through the affected sections of Route 6 during overnight hours to anticipate possible delays, reduce their speed and exercise caution when approaching work zones.
Drivers should also watch for temporary traffic signs, lane closures and construction personnel working near the roadway.
