Report of juvenile brandishing gun leads to discovery of “ghost guns” in Dennis

DENNIS – From Dennis Police: On October 6th, Dennis Police Officers responded to a report of a juvenile brandishing a handgun toward a victim before fleeing the scene. No injuries or shots fired were reported. After the initial investigation, DPD Detectives sought and obtained a search warrant for the juvenile’s residence.

During the execution of that warrant, detectives recovered a sizeable quantity of ghost gun related items, including multiple unfinished or partially assembled handguns with homemade frames, slides, magazines, triggers, springs, and other internal components. There were tools and precision toolkits commonly used in firearm assembly, along with a 3D-printer and numerous rolls of filament. Detectives also seized two laptops and a cellphone as evidence.

Ghost guns are firearms that lack serial numbers and can be produced using 3D-printing technology and other readily available components. They are untraceable, unregistered, and do not contain serial numbers, The accessibility of the tools needed to make ghost guns allows individuals to create weapons capable of firing ammunition. They pose serious risk to public safety, and in this case, in the hands of juveniles, the risks increase.

The Dennis Police Department is urging parents and guardians to be vigilant regarding activity inside their homes after this investigation revealed the ability for juveniles to access technology to produce contraband. Chief Brady stated, “This case shows how quickly and quietly these tools can make their way into a home. We are asking parents and guardians to be aware of what their children may be accessing online, what packages are being delivered, and what equipment, like 3D printers, is being used behind closed doors.” The Dennis Police Department encourages anyone to contact the department with concerns regarding potential ghost gun activity or associated suspicious behavior in the home.

The investigation remains active. Appropriate charges will be sought in consultation with the Cape and Island’s District Attorney’s Office. Due to the age of the individual involved, no further identifying information will be released.
