YARMOUTH – Recent heavy rainfall has prompted the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries to close shellfishing in portions of Yarmouth, affecting recreational shellfishing activities scheduled for Sunday, November 8.
According to an announcement from the Town of Yarmouth, shellfishing is temporarily prohibited in shellfish growing area SC28, which includes Lewis Bay, because of the recent rainfall.
As a result, recreational shellfishing will not be permitted in Mill Creek on Sunday, November 8.
Town officials said they will provide an update when the affected waters are cleared to reopen.
However, the town emphasized that Lewis Pond, located near Seagull Beach, is not affected by the closure and will remain open for recreational oyster harvesting on Sunday.
Heavy rainfall can result in stormwater runoff carrying bacteria and other contaminants into coastal waters, potentially making shellfish unsafe for consumption. Temporary closures are used to protect public health until harvesting conditions are considered safe.
Residents and recreational shellfishers are encouraged to check for updated notices before heading out to harvest shellfish.
For additional information about the closure or recreational shellfishing regulations, residents can contact the Town of Yarmouth at (508) 760-4800.
