Smoke detectors alert apartment complex residents to mattress fire

BARNSTABLE
– From Barnstable Fire: The Barnstable Fire Department responded this evening, at 1935 (7:35 PM) to a report of a past electrical fire. After arriving on scene, the fire department was met by the occupant of a third-floor apartment of the Village Green Apartment complex, who stated that there was a mattress on fire in the apartment. The Barnstable Fire Department evacuated the building and made entry into the apartment where a light smoke condition and a smoldering mattress was found. The mattress was completely extinguished using a pressurized water extinguisher and was subsequently removed from the building. Damage was confined to the mattress with no extension to the structure.

Early notification of the incident was brought to the attention of the apartment occupants due in a large part to the apartment having working smoke detectors. All residents and visitors of Cape Cod are urged to make sure that there are working smoke detectors in their homes and if anyone has an issue in obtaining smoke detectors to contact their local fire department for assistance.

Crews were on scene for approximately one hour wetting down and removing the burned mattress. No injuries were reported and no occupants were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
