BOURNE – From the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office: The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office is expanding its Community Cooking initiative with a pilot pizza program.
Made from scratch by incarcerated individuals at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility, the pizzas are baked, frozen and delivered ready to eat. Currently the pizzas are being delivered to the Falmouth Service Center, with a plan to expand distribution.
“Our Community Cooking Program has been baking bread for food pantries for nearly a year,” said Sheriff Donna D. Buckley. “Now we are adding handmade and healthy frozen pizzas as an option as we work with community partners to help address food insecurity in Barnstable County. Our Community Cooking program is educational, vocational and a chance for incarcerated individuals to give back.”
The Community Cooking Program began in November 2025, when participants in a baking program started producing hundreds of rolls and loaves of bread for local food pantries. Today with distribution by the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension’s Food Access Program and the Waquoit Congregational Church, the bread can be found on the shelves of food pantries from Falmouth to Truro.
Inside the Correctional Facility’s commercial kitchen, participants in the Community Cooking Program spend four nights a week preparing fresh dough, bread and pizzas. The process provides hands-on experience in food preparation, baking, kitchen operations and teamwork while producing food that directly benefits people in the community.
