BREWSTER – Brewster Fire-Rescue held a Memorial Remembrance Service at 6pm at Headquarters Station to honor those killed and injured in the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001; led by Brewster Chief Robert Moran. The well attended service included presentation of the colors by Brewster Fire and Police Color Guard along with members of the Brewster VFW; all led by Bagpiper Sgt. Jim Rosato of Orleans Police. The Invocation was given by Pastor William Kaliyadan, song selections performed by the Brewster Middle School Chorus, a reading by Brewster PD Capt Heath Eldredge of the poignant poem “That Day”, lowering of the flag to half mast and ringing of the bell (5-5-5-5) signaling a line of duty death of a Firefighter.

In addition, Chief Moran explained the tradition of placing a “Peace Rose” on the name of each individual inscribed on the Memorial Pools at Ground Zero on their birthday, and pointed out that there is at least one birthday recognized every day of the year……and there are 7 people whose birthdays fall on this day each year. A Wreath was placed at the base of the permanent Memorial ( which includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Center )  located in front of the Fire Station. The importance of “Never Forget” was emphasized in remarks by Ralph Ingegneri, followed by singing of the song “Wind Beneath My Wings”.  The Chief also spoke of the ongoing health issues and deaths of people attributed to their work at Ground Zero during the rescue and recovery effort, and thanked the residents of Brewster and all of those in attendance for continuing to support all Public Safety personnel, as well as all those people that work each year to make this important Memorial Ceremony a reality.

A Sept 11 Prayer was read by Harwich Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Kent Farrenkopf, followed by raising of the flag to full staff by Brewster Firefighters, and then the playing of “Amazing Grace” by the Bagpiper to lead the Color Guard out. Closing remarks and a heartfelt thanks were offered by Chief Moran with a rousing version of “God Bless America” led by the Chorus with participation from the crowd the concluded the Event.

343 FDNY (Fire Dept of New York) members were killed in the line of duty that day when the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed; along with Police Officers from NYPD and the Port Authority of NY/NJ, EMS providers and numerous private citizens. Sadly, the number of deaths attributed to the attacks in New York continues to climb each year as additional public safety personnel (particularly FDNY Firefighters) die from diseases related to their work at Ground Zero (“the Pile”) searching to rescue survivors and then for body recovery. Thus, the number 343, has a special significance to Firefighters around the world and the flags in the ground at this Ceremony were placed strategically to show that number. In addition; as pointed out by Chief Clarke, most fire apparatus have warnings that state “Keep Back 300 Feet”; however Harwich’s Engine 64 warning states “Keep Back 343 Feet” as a way of showing honor and respect to those who “Gave All”.

Both speakers reminded all those in attendance the importance to “Never Forget” and to pass down this important part of America’s history to those who were too young to remember and especially to those who were not or are not yet born. In closing, the Chiefs thanked the public for their attendance and offered refreshments to all with the opportunity to meet and mingle with their public safety first responders.
