How to Speak Volumes Without Saying a Word

Artistic Director and Conductor for the Cape Symphony Jung-Ho Pak has worked with world class artists like Yo-Yo Ma and James Taylor, and has conducted orchestras around the world.

He thinks that every person deserves a chance at experiencing beauty and joy. He thinks that a symphony can be as loved as a pennant winning baseball team, as customer oriented as a first class hotel, as fun as a giant amusement park, and as entrepreneurial as a high tech, start-up company. And he thinks that audiences want one thing: to experience something unforgettable.

Have you ever wondered what a Maestro listens to to prepare for upcoming performances? Jung-Ho Pak has shared one of his picks for his upcoming performances!

Maestro Pick: Humming Chorus from Madam Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini

Performed by RCA Italiana Opera Chorus and Orchestra, with conductor Erich Leinsdorf
Opera moments in which there is no formal singing and help connect scene changes are called intermezzi. One exception where there is singing, but no words, is the lovely humming chorus from Madam Butterfly. In the final act, the villagers are in the distance humming a simple melody, unaware and oblivious to the tragedy that is to follow. We tend to think of Puccini as being the master of the hyper-emotive moment, but it is this quiet chorus that demonstrates that less is often more.
