We haven’t even reached Halloween, so it seems premature to be writing about Black Friday, but I’ll make an exception for Record Store Day. Twice each year, fans line up early outside their favorite indie record store for a special day to celebrate vinyl records. A special selection of albums, marketed for the occasion, are available at participating record shops.
Prior to the day itself, a list of available titles is released so vinyl enthusiasts can see what will be available. That list has been released on the Record Store Day website!
It feels a bit short coming in at only 3 pages, but I love prowling through the list to see which of my favorite bands have albums coming and what specialty releases will be on hand. I’m already finding albums I’d like to have from Billy Idol and The Eagles to Babymetal.
Since the Fall event is in late November, I’ll remind folks to dress warmly for the often long outdoor wait. Most stores open at 8am but only allow a few people in at a time. As many of the albums are in limited distribution, you may want to get there early to ensure you can find what you crave. This may entail waiting on that cold line longer than desired.
I always plan for the worst and wear boots, hat, and gloves. Each year I see someone who hopped out of bed and headed out in lounge pants. After ten minutes on line, they’re shivering. Plan ahead for that cold wait.
Check in with your favorite local record store to see if they are participating in Record Store Day and I’ll see you on line!
