Hello, My Name Is: Ronald Eaton

Welcome to our new feature, “Hello My Name Is…”. In the coming weeks we will have the opportunity to spend a little time getting to know people in our community. As you know, the best way to learn about someone is to ask questions. In this series we will ask ten questions to different individuals so that we can know the folks who live with us here on Cape Cod.

Hello, My Name Is Ronald Eaton

Occupation: Funeral Director/Family Service Counselor at Doane, Beal & Ames and Nickerson Funeral Homes

What was your first paying job? Hmmm…. Not counting working for my dad in his funeral home at a young age, I would say a kennel attendant/ groomer’s assistant at Pleasant Bay Animal Hospital in Harwich in high school.  I wanted to be a veterinarian at the time, so it gave me a chance to work with animals.

When was the last time you laughed really hard?  It was a couple weeks ago when I was away at training in West Virginia. The topics were pretty serious, but the instructor hadn’t heard of some of the terms, which caused everyone in the classroom to burst out laughing.

Did you grow up on the Cape? Yes, I grew up in Harwich. I lived in different towns across the Cape, eventually coming back to my hometown.

Where is your ‘go-to’ spot for a cup of chowder? That’s a difficult one, because there’s so many places out there, and I love chowder! If I see chowder on a menu, I order it.

Do you have a favorite non-profit group here on the Cape? The Cape has so many wonderful non-profit groups who do so much, but the Family Pantry of Cape Cod stands out.  I had the pleasure of watching it grow and help so many families on Cape since I was 10 years old. I remember volunteering in the original tiny storefront!

What is the one thing you love to do that surprises people the most? Surprisingly, being a musician, and that I’ve played in a few bands here on the Cape. People are like “you play an instrument???” I guess with my profession, it’s not the norm…lol

In a parallel universe, what would you be doing?  I would be a full time volunteer.  It doesn’t matter what I would be volunteering, I just really enjoy helping people.

What person had the greatest influence on you and why? I would have to say my late mom. She was a caring, kind and understanding person. She had a very positive yet realistic outlook on life. She wouldn’t care what people thought of her, especially when she’s done something ‘flaky’.

If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I see? Nothing exciting: Milk, orange juice, bread and beer – Switchback from Vermont is my favorite!

If you could go out on a boat fishing for a day, who would you bring?  I would bring my daughter. Just seeing her excitement with a new experience always makes my day.
