The Magic of Art’s Dune Tours

Art’s Dune Tours is a Provincetown tradition. Not just for the tourists who are now 2nd, even 3rd generation tour goers, but for the Costa family behind the business.

Rob Costa grew up in the family business of Art’s Dune Tours. Sometimes he would ride along in the backseat listening to the stories his father, Art, told customers. As a teenager, he worked summers giving tours and telling some of the same anecdotes he’d learned from his parents. Then when Art’s health declined he took over the family business.

It’s easy to see why you would return to Cape Cod, but it’s even easier to see why you’d be drawn to the dunes. Provincetown dunes have been attracting artists and writers seeking creative inspiration. From Jackson Pollock to Tennessee Williams, the dunes have been the backdrop for the paintings and plays that are now known worldwide.

Art’s Dune Tours take place daily. Just as they’ve done since 1946. The one hour tour leaves Standish Street in Provincetown and takes you into the untouched dunes that Rob calls the Provincetown Outback.

Besides the staff at Art’s Dune Tours, the only other groups allowed to drive in to the dunes are artists going to dune shacks and national park rangers.

The guides with Art’s Dune Tours are extremely knowledgeable. Throughout the tour, you’ll learn the history of the dunes as well as the history of Provincetown. You’ll learn about the different types of plants and berries that grow on the dunes and the unique ways they’ve learned to survive. There are several amazing viewpoints. The tour guide was more than happy to stop and allow us to take it all in and take pictures.

The tour stops at one of the largest hills where tour goers can get out and stretch their legs. It’s the quietest and most serene place you’ll find in Provincetown. We look pictures and enjoyed the view. From the hill you can see the water, the dunes, and the town. If you’re lucky you can even spot a whale in the distance.

A trip to Provincetown isn’t complete without seeing the dunes. The best way to experience the dunes is with Art’s Dune Tours. The trips run hourly from Standish Street in Provincetown. Senior and Military discounts are available. There’s also a discount if you book online. Don’t miss out. Make Art’s Dune Tours part of your summer.
