NANTUCKET – It was 62 years ago Wednesday that the Italian liner S.S. Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish passenger ship Stockholm off Nantucket.

It began sinking and went down the following morning.

51 people — 46 from the Andrea Doria, five from the Stockholm — were killed.

Since its sinking in 1956, the wreck has been deadly for divers looking to explore the ship.

As many as 16 divers have drowned in the 240 feet of water 50 miles south of Nantucket. The most recent was last July.
