APCC Seeks AG’s Help

COURTESY PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION

DENNIS – The Association to Preserve Cape Cod is seeking to enlist the assistance of Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s office as they look to prevent relaxing the rules for Entergy as the company shuts down the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in the spring.

Entergy has submitted a proposal to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to exempt the company from a requirement of a 10 mile Emergency Planning Zone around the plant.

In a letter to Healey, the APCC acknowledges the Cape is outside the Safety Zone but fears the exemption could set a precedent for further relaxing the rules. The letter points out that an emergency at the plant due to rule reduction could pose a threat to the area.

The advocacy group says although the NRC has the final say a strong opposition by the state’s highest law enforcement official could carry weight in the decision.
