Hyannis – The Town of Barnstable has announced the hire of a new Building Commissioner.

The Town Council voted last week to ratify the appointment of Brian Florence for the department’s top job.

Florence, of Marstons Mills, has over 25 years of experience working in management with both the public and private sectors and has been cited for his strengths in construction, inspectional services, and code enforcement.

As commissioner, Florence will oversee Barnstable’s Building Division, which is responsible for the permitting and oversight of all aspects of building construction, zoning enforcement, sign codes, site plan review and permitting and inspection activities related to electrical, gas and plumbing codes throughout the town.

Many of the functions of the Division are mandated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including enforcement and implementation of the state building code, the state zoning act, the state gas and plumbing codes, and the state architectural access code.

Additional local codes and standards must also be enforced, a process which will be and additional responsibility for the new commissioner.

Florence is currently an employee with the Town of Dennis, where he has worked for the last two decades, and has is currently serving as the chairman on the town’s zoning board of appeals.

He is expected to begin his role as Barnstable Building Commissioner in mid-August, replacing current commissioner Jeff Lauzon.
