SANDWICH – The New England Brass Band is coming to Sandwich this month.
The band plays in the English tradition, which has its roots in the social betterment of the UK working class in the early 1800’s.
English Victorians believed that the bands were socially acceptable and a force for moral and positive good in society.
In the 1830’s, a surge in popularity came as new instruments had vast improvements.
Brass instruments were relatively cheap, especially when compared to woodwinds that were hand made at the time.
The performers became musical heroes and are considered by some to be the UK rock stars of the 19th century. By the 1920’s, top notch composers were writing specifically for brass bands.
The New England brass band consists of 30 members. The show takes place on November 18th at 7 p.m. at the Sandwich Town Hall theater.
