Bourne Planning Board Still Deciding on Sagamore Senior Development

BOURNE – The Bourne Planning Board still needs to make a decision regarding the proposed Canal Street Crossing senior community project in Sagamore Beach.

Developers of the project recently presented details and answered public questions at a meeting with the board.

Chairwoman of the board of selectmen Judith Froman asked the planning board to be aware of issues raised by those in the community.

Specifically, she mentioned the environmental impact that the project might have–a topic also brought up by her husband, Scott.

“I personally ask the planning board to make sure that we do due diligence with making sure that there is plenty of vegetation that is put back into place,” Froman said.

Potential issues with traffic were also brought up by some community members.

Froman went on to issue a warning for future senior housing in the area.

“I know I keep coming forward saying, ‘Proceed with caution,’ she continued.

“Don’t over-saturate the market with the housing.”

The Canal Street Crossing development is planned to be between Hunters Brook Road and Canal Street, near the Sagamore Bridge. Fifteen residential housing units would be offered, along with a medical office and a retirement facility.

The Bourne Planning Board will vote to approve or deny the plan and special permit needed on December 12.

If the board approves the plan, the last step for the project’s establishment would be securing permission to install a bridge over protected wetlands from the Bourne Conservation Commission.
