Cape Cod Herring Run Sizes Decrease

DENNIS – Most of the Cape Cod herring run sizes decreased in 2017.

That’s according to data collected by the Association to Preserve Cape Cod.  Areas studied include Brewster, Wellfleet, Harwich, Mashpee, Falmouth and Yarmouth.

There were only four runs that showed an increase.

Fisheries scientists continue to study the troubling decrease of herring in the Northeast.  Possible causes include over fishing, nutrient pollution, poaching, barriers to fish passage and climate change.

State officials say the overall population is depleted to near-historic levels.
