Cape & Islands Communties Receive State Grants to Prepare for Climate Change

The state has awarded $12 million in grant funding through the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program and more than $1 million will come to Cape and Islands communities.

The grants are for the planning and implementation of climate change resilience projects.

Aquinnah, Dennis and Harwich received a total of $65,000 for the planning process.

Edgartown, Falmouth and Nantucket will receive just over $1 million in action grants.

Edgartown was awarded $90,035 for Climate Change Flood Vulnerability Assessment/Adaptation Planning.

Falmouth has two projects receiving funding, including $74,787 for Coastal Resiliency Planning for the Surf Drive Area, and $760,000 for the construction of phase 2 of the Coonamessett River Restoration Project.

Nantucket was awarded $78,000 for Adaptation Designs.

“Massachusetts has been a national leader in addressing climate change, and these grants represent the Commonwealth’s largest funding commitment yet to improving community resilience to climate change impacts,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “Mitigating climate change and adapting to reduce risk and build resilience will foster stronger communities, protect residents and natural resources, and contribute to strong economic growth and innovation throughout the Commonwealth.”

The MVP grant program, through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, provides communities with technical support, climate change data and planning tools to identify hazards and develop strategies to improve resilience.

This round of funding is part of the largest release of climate change resilience funding for communities in the history of the state.
