Cape League Recap: Orleans Wins 10th Straight

Falmouth Commodores 3

Cotuit Kettleers 5

W: Austin Kitchen (1-1) L: William Ethredge (0-1)

The Commodores entered the week of Independence Day on a 6 game win streak only to see themselves drop two in a row. Cotuit took advantage of 4 Falmouth errors to hang on to win their 2nd in a row, 5-3. Starters Seth Shuman (Georgia Southern/Cotuit) and Robbie Peto (UNC/Falmouth) both pitched very well. Shuman threw 5 innings giving up 4 hits 1 unearned run and striking 4, while Peto went 4 innings of 2 hit ball giving up 1 unearned run. The game was tight heading into the bottom of the 8th, but thanks to RBI singles by Miles Lewis (Michigan) and Brett Kinneman (NC State), the Kettleers added some insurance to make the score 5-1. Turns out those runs were huge as Falmouth would score 2 in the top of the 9th, but would come up just short and fall to 3rd place in the West.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 4

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 0

W: Austin Drury (1-0) L: Tim Brennan (1-1)

The slump continues for the Red Sox as they are shutout 4-0 for the 3rd game in a row. If one does the math, that is 27 innings without a run scored, which is the longest drought out of any team this summer. Austin Drury (North Florida) made his Cape Cod League debut for Hyannis and made his presence felt right away. Drury pitched 5 scoreless innings only giving up 2 hits while striking out 4. The Harbor Hawks held a 1 run lead going into the top of the 5th, then with 2 runners on the 9 batter, Chris Proctor (Duke) smoked a round tripper over the Red Wilson Field fence to give Hyannis a 4-0 lead. The Harbor Hawk bullpen allowed only 2 hits in the final 4 frames to secure the victory. For the Red Sox, they have dropped 8 of their last 10 and have managed just 12 hits in their last 3 games.

Brewster Whitecaps 7

Harwich Mariners 6

W: Jonathan Stiever (2-1) L: Jamie Sara (0-1) S: Robert Broom (2)

This game went down to the wire at Whitehouse Field. Harwich had the winning run on 1st and the tying run on 2nd, but Robert Broom (Mercer) was able to strike out the final batter and the Whitecaps held on to win their 9th game of the season 7-6. Both starting pitchers got roughed up to begin the game, Harwich put up a 4 spot in the bottom of the 2nd in response to a 2 run top by Brewster. Then Brewster came back and added to two more runs, which included a solo bomb from Chandler Taylor (Bama) in the top of the 3rd to knot things up at 4. The pitching settled in until the 7th where both Brewster and Harwich deposited 2 runs to the scoreboard to make it 6-6. In the top of the 8th Brewster loaded the bases with 0 outs, thanks to 2 Harwich walks and a Connor Smith (Western Michigan) single. UNC’s Kyle Datre lined a single to right to drive in the go ahead run. Sam Bordner (Louisville) and Broom would execute scoreless 8th and 9th innings to keep the Mariners at bay.

Wareham Gatemen 4

Bourne Braves 2

W: Jordan Britton (1-0) L: Andrew Crane (0-1) S: Brett Conine (1)

The Gatemen went down early to Braves after a Scott Schreiber (Nebraska) RBI single to right in the bottom of the 1st. Wareham would remain dormant until the top of the 3rd when Jarren Duran (Long Beach State) hit a RBI triple and later would score on a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning up 2-1, 1st baseman Willie MacIver (Washington) knocked in his 10th run of the year to put the Gatemen up 3-1. Bourne would respond with a run in the bottom of the 4th, but after that the Wareham bullpen slammed the door shut on the Brave offense. Jordan Britton (Oregon State) pitched 3 blemishless innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season and Brett Conine (Cal St. Fullerton) struck out the side in the 9th to notch his first save.

Chatham Anglers 3

Orleans Firebirds 4

W: Logan Gilbert (1-1) L: Dan Hammer (1-1) S: Brooks Wilson (2)

The Firebirds held on for dear life to win their 10th game in a row and improve to a league best 13-6. Orleans got out to a 4-0 lead early in the game due in large part to a Jaxx Groshans (Kansas) two run dinger in the bottom of the 3rd. The Firebirds remained in control for most of the game, their pitching allowed just 3 Angler hits, but it was a two run blast by shortstop Jeremy Pena (Maine) in the top of the 8th that pulled Chatham within 1 run. With the added pressure of preserving the win streak, Brooks Wilson stifled the noise and struck out the side to log his 2nd save of the season.
