Cape League Update: Cotuit Rallies to Tie Hyannis

COTUIT – Monday night featured a full slate of games for the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Brewster Whitecaps 0

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 4

W: Kris Bubic (3-1) L: J.R. McDermott (2-2)

Yarmouth-Dennis carried the pitching momentum over from Sunday to shutout the Brewster Whitecaps for sole possession of 2nd place in the East. Kris Bubic (Stanford) pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball, only allowing 3 hits, striking out 5 in the process. Bubic was followed up by the combo of Tanner Graham (UAB) and Andrew Quezada (Cal St Fullerton), who allowed just one hit in the final 3 to close out the Whitecaps. At the dish, Alfonso Rivas (Arizona) went 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBIs and Nick Hoerner (Stanford) launched his team leading 4th home run of the season.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 9

Cotuit Kettleers 9

18 runs, 23 hits and one tie ballgame was the result of the battle between the Harbor Hawks of Hyannis and the Cotuit Kettleers. Seeking a 7 game win-streak, the Kettleers were in a battle all night. Hyannis and Cotuit traded blows in the beginning of the game with mirroring 3 run innings, then they each scored 4 total runs in the 4th and 5th innings. Hyannis logged two runs in the top of the 8th and had the Kettleers’ streak in their sights. However, the Kettleers weren’t done yet. With one runner on, Michael Toglia (UCLA) blasted a home run over the fence to tie the ballgame. Cotuit was unable to capitalize on the momentum and left a runner in scoring position. Darkness ended the game in a tie before it could head into extras.

Bourne Braves 7

Falmouth Commodores 5

W: Bryan Hoeing (1-0) L: Mitchell Miller (1-1) S: Kyle Marman (1)

Bourne overcame a 4 run deficit scoring 7 runs in innings 6-8 to defeat divisional rival Falmouth, 7-5. It was a Scott Schreiber (Louisville) two run blast in the top of the 7th that put the Braves up by 2. For Falmouth, they allowed 7 walks on the night, 5 belonging to the bullpen which resulted in the squandered lead. Bourne had a rough start to the night, but their bullpen settled in nicely pitching 5 hitless innings to hold the Commodore bats at bay.

Orleans Firebirds 8

Harwich Mariners 3

W: JT Hintzen (2-0) L: Cole Aker (0-3)

Harwich was so close to the upset on Monday night, but Orleans rallied for a monster 6 run inning in the top of the 9th to break the hearts of the Mariner faithful. The Firebirds entered the 9th by putting the first two batters on and Nike Delocati (Loyola Marymount) knotted the game up with a RBI single. From there on out the floodgates opened up. Steven Passatempo (UMass Lowell) knocked in 2 with a double, followed by a Stephen Scott (Vanderbilt) RBI double, a Romy Gonzalez (Miami) RBI single, and finally a Cesar Salazar (Arizona) sacrifice fly. Harwich was able to muster a hit in the bottom of the frame, but unable to mount a rally and the Firebirds extended their lead in the East.

Chatham Anglers 8

Wareham Gatemen 2

W: Rodney Hutchison Jr. (1-0) L: Jordan Britton (1-1)

Tied 2-2 going into the top of the 8th, Chatham unleashed a flurry of hits to win on the road against Wareham, 8-2. Shea Langeliers (Baylor) put a ball into orbit for his 5th home run of the season, which put the Anglers up 4-2. Chatham would be gifted a run by a Wareham error, and Antonio Ralat (UAB) hit a 2 RBI single to cap off the inning. The Anglers would add a run for good measure in the top of the 9th to pull within a game of 3rd place.
