Cape League Update: Harwich Halts Y-D Streak at 3

Harwich Mariners 7

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 3

W: Jacob Billingsley (1-1) L: Josh McMinn (3-2) S: Theodore Rodliff (3)

Bayou Bengal Antoine Duplantis did not make his Cape League debut until July 8th and has provided a much needed spark for the Mariner offense. After hitting his 1st homer on Tuesday, he launched his 2nd of the season against the Red Sox Wednesday. Duplantis finished the game with 4 hits, 2 doubles, and 4 RBIs to lead Harwich to a 7-3 upset victory over Y-D.  Harwich starter, Jacob Billingsley (Mississippi State) dazzled in his 3rd start of the year going 5 shutout innings striking out 7. The Red Sox would score 3 in the bottom of the 7th, but closer Theodore Rodliff (Stony Brook) came in to stop the bleeding to earn his 3rd save on the season.

Falmouth Commodores 4

Orleans Firebirds 3

W: Matt Mercer (3-1) L: Taylor Sugg (1-1)

Soggy conditions cut this game an inning shy of a full 9, but the Commodores aren’t complaining as they edge out 1st place Orleans, 4-3. Orleans jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage, but that lead was short lived as Josh Breaux (Texas) smacked a 2-run shot in the top of the 2nd to put the Commodores up 2-1. The teams traded runs, but it was a Logan Davidson (Clemson) RBI single that gave Falmouth the insurance they needed. For Orleans, Stephen Scott (Vanderbilt) remained locked in at the plate going 2 for 4 knocking in his 20th RBI of the season.

Brewster Whitecaps 9

Chatham Anglers 3

W: Tony Locey (2-1) L: Dan Hammer (1-2) S: Matthew Beck (1)

The Hammer became the nail in Wednesday’s game as Brewster sprayed hits all over Veterans Field logging 7 runs against Chatham’s Dan Hammer in the first 2 innings of the game. Alabama’s Chandler Taylor hit his 5th home run of the summer, while catcher Justin Kunz smacked his 2nd. On the mound, Tony Locey was in control during his 5 innings of work only giving up 1 run on 5 hits and notched 3 strikeouts. The Anglers attempted a last ditch rally effort in the bottom of the 9th, but fell short handing the Whitecaps their 13th win of the year.

Cotuit Kettleers 2

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 3

W: MD Johnson (1-2) L: Chase Cohen (2-2) S: Ryan Weiss (1)

The standings in the West are becoming tighter and tighter as Hyannis picked up their 10th win of the season against division leader Cotuit on Wednesday night. After two rough starts to begin the summer, Harbor Hawk MD Johnson (Dallas Baptist) has turned in 2 nice starts in a row including nearly 5 innings of 3 hit ball last night. Cotuit’s Zack Kone (Duke) tried to get the Kettleers going in the 3rd with a lead off home run, but the bats remained puzzled by Hyannis pitching for vast majority of the evening. The Harbor Hawk bullpen stepped it up to throw 4.1 innings only allowing 1 run and striking out 10 Kettleers.

Wareham Gatemen 3

Bourne Braves 4

W: Ryan Feltner (1-0) L: Grant Wolfram (0-2)

The game was wrought with errors as the Gatemen and Braves combined for 7. Despite the blunders in the field, the two teams went down to the wire at Doran Park. Down 2 runs going into the 8th, Wareham mounted a nice little comeback scoring runs in the 8th and the 9th to tie up the game at 3. However, 2 singles and a dropped 3rd strike would load up the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th. Kennesaw State’s Grant Williams stepped into the batter’s box and lined a 0-1 offering into the outfield scoring teammate Jameson Hannah (Dallas Baptist) from 3rd to walk it off for the Braves.
