Cape League Update: Y-D Stuns Orleans in 9th

FALMOUTH – The Commodores and Harbor Hawks game was postponed until Monday, July 17th. However, there were 4 other tilts across Cape Cod yesterday:

Orleans Firebirds 7

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 8

W: Karl Blum (1-2) L: Josh Hiatt (0-1)

When 1st meets 2nd you expect there to be fireworks and Tuesday’s game between Orleans and Yarmouth-Dennis did not disappoint. The starting pitching matchup featured Tim Brennan (St. Joseph’s) for the Red Sox and Logan Gilbert (Stetson) for the Firebirds. For Gilbert, it was his 3rd start against the Red Sox out of his 4 for the year. He threw 5 innings, striking out 6, but a couple errors in the field led to 2 unearned runs. Brennan matched him, giving up 2 in 5 innings with 5 strikeouts. The teams entered the 7th tied up at 2, then with one swing of the bat, the game came to life. With the bases chuck full of Firebirds, Vandy’s Stephen Scott smoked a grand slam over the fence to put Orleans up 6-2. Scott would finish the night 2 for 5 with 6 RBIs. Staring at a 4 run deficit, the Red Sox fired back with a 3 home run of their own in the bottom of the frame by Kyle Isbel (UNLV) to put YD within 1. The Firebirds would add an insurance run in the top of the 9th. Down 7-5, the Red Sox had to figure out a way to score on Orleans closer, Josh Hiatt (UNC) who had yet to give up a run in his prior 9 appearances. After getting a quick out, Hiatt beaned a batter, walked a batter, and surrendered a single to load the bases. A wild pitch would score one run and another would cross on a 5-3 put out to tie the ballgame. 2-outs, bottom of the 9th, winning run on 3rd, Monday’s standout, Alfonso Rivas (Arizona), would be Tuesday’s hero lining a single up the middle to walk it off for the Red Sox. Y-D has now won 3 straight and are within a game and a half of 1st.

Chatham Anglers 10

Cotuit Kettleers 5

W: Adam Wolf (1-0) L: Seth Shuman (0-2)

Riding the momentum from Monday’s come from behind tie, the Kettleers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The good feelings at Lowell Park were quickly quelled as the Anglers got hot in the top of the 2nd. After loading the bases with no outs, Josh Stowers (Louisville) roped a double into the gap scoring 2. The next batter struck out, but then a walk reloaded the bases for Chatham, which was followed by a sacrifice fly, a single, and a double to put the Anglers up 5-2. Cotuit brought the fans back to the edge of their seats after Griffin Conine hit a 2 run bomb, his 6th of the season. However, it was all Chatham from there on out. The Anglers would outscore the Kettleers 5-1 in the late innings to hand Cotuit their first loss in 7 outings.

Bourne Braves 1

Harwich Mariners 3

W: Brian Christian (2-1) L: Andrew Crane (0-2) S: Logan Browning (1)

Plymouth native Brian Christian’s (Northeastern) last outing on the mound was an 8 run disaster against Orleans. It is said pitchers need short term memories and Christian showed no signs of recall on Tuesday night, pitching 7 innings of 1 hit ball to lead the Mariners to a much needed victory against the Bourne Braves. The Mariners got a jolt early, lead off batter, Antoine Duplantis (LSU) took an 0-2 count offering deep for his 1st home run of the year. Harwich would add runs in the 4th and the 5th for a little insurance. The win breaks a 6 game losing streak for the Mariners and now they look to turn 1 into 2 tonight against the already streaking Red Sox.

Brewster Whitecaps 1

Wareham Gatemen 2

W: Miller Hogan (3-0) L: Joe Moletierre (0-2)   S: Brett Conine (2)

Gatemen pitching executed a bend but don’t break philosophy, scattering 10 hits and only allowing 1 run to cross the plate in Tuesday’s win over Brewster. Wareham’s Miller Hogan (St. Louis) picked up his 3rd win of the season and extends his scoreless streak to 15 innings. Brewster would tie the game up in the 7th, but Wareham would respond immediately in the bottom half with a run of their own. Brett Conine would come on in the 9th for the Gatemen, strike out 2 and pick up his 2nd save of the season.
