HYANNIS – Efforts have begun by the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and Councils on Aging from local communities to improve transportation options for the elderly population.

The transit agency and COA leaders from all Cape Cod towns, except one who was sick, met earlier this month for the first of planned biannual meetings to discuss improving mobility.

“It was a little bit a celebration as well as a planning effort for going forward, but I just wanted to thank the council folks and the Elder Service of Cape Cod and all the other senior agencies we’ve communicated with,” said Tom Cahir, the administrator of the CCRTA.

The senior population on Cape Cod is expected to increase to 43 percent by 2030, which would be up from 36 percent in 2015.

The transit agency has implemented several reforms over the past year including Free Fare Wednesdays for seniors, leasing vans to local COA’s and expanding training programs for drivers.

“It was a good day and it shows that we are planning and trying to prepare for this onslaught of seniors,” Cahir said.

Cahir said they discussed the accomplishments made over the last year and pledged to continue to work together.

COA Directors and Councils on Aging Serving Together co-chairman Lynne Waterman and Chris Hottle participated during the meeting.

They said the collaboration between the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and the Cape Cod Councils on Aging is essential to meet the transportation needs of the growing and significant senior population in our region.
