CHATHAM – Former Chatham Selectman Tim Roper was honored by his colleagues at their meeting on Tuesday, after he passed away last weekend at the age of 65.

Roper served on the board of selectmen from 2010 to 2016, spending a year as chairman in 2013.

“The wit, charm, energy political acumen, he loved this town,” said Selectmen Chair Jeffery Dykens. “He was too young to die, and he will be sorely, sorely missed.”

Roper previously worked as a political consultant in Washington, D.C. before moving to Chatham in 1989.

He was active in local activities, including helping to raise money for the Chatham Orpheum Theater and played a key part in his role as selectmen in getting the town’s fire station built.

“He was a very talented and hardworking member of the board of selectmen,” said Selectman Dean Nicastro. “I had the privilege of overlapping with him for one year. I think he always had the best interests of the Town of Chatham and the people of Chatham at heart. I felt privileged to count him as a friend and along with many other people in this town, I will miss him.”

Selectmen held a moment of silence for Roper before they began their meeting.

No details have been unveiled about Roper’s sudden passing.
