CHILMARK – It could be back to the drawing board for selectmen in Chilmark as the town explores building a new fire station.
According to the Martha’s Vineyard Gazette, selectmen had identified land behind town hall as a possible location for the new station, but Fire Chief David Norton expressed concerns with the location.
Selectmen are now reconsidering the purchase, and have until January 15 to make a decision. A special town meeting to approve the purchase was originally set for January 11, but it is not clear if that will go forward.
The land would cost $975,000.
Officials believe the department has outgrown its current station.
