Clean Up Begins As Snow Stops But Winds Continue

WinterCarSnowCarsBARNSTABLE – Public safety officials, department of public works crews and police and fire officers are beginning to assess damage from the latest storm to pummel the region.

In the Town of Barnstable, Department of Public Works officials have been posting progress on the storm before, during and after the flakes fell.

At 2:45, they posted, “We have entered a phase where there will not be any new snow with this storm, but where winds will remain with gusts into the 30-40 mph range well into tomorrow. As a result drifting snow will be an issue throughout the remainder of today and tomorrow until the winds subside.”

For residents wondering when their roads will be plowed, Barnstable DPW posted, “DPW crews are in the process of finishing plowing work on the main roads, and then will apply salt sand mixture to them. Secondary crews are now starting to widen the secondary roads out to pre-storm levels, and push back corners.”

In Falmouth, police have posted that while snow ended around 1 p.m., winds and extreme cold continue to challenge public safety workers.

“Strong winds and cold temperatures are remaining throughout the rest of the day, with single digits by tomorrow morning. Blowing snow is causing hazardous driving conditions, and residents are urged to stay off roads to allow for plowing operations and emergency vehicles to travel,” according to a Falmouth Police social media posting.

Like many Cape towns, Falmouth residents did not have to deal with any major power outages during the storm.

Falmouth police advised, “Please remember to check on your neighbors. Clean out your house vents, and dig out the hydrant near by.”

In the Outer Cape, Route 6 has opened back up after police closed to road because of low visibility.

A massive outage in Provincetown was repaired but Truro residents are expected to lose power later today when utility crews replace a pole, according to police.

Wellfleet police officials posted, “They are expecting to do a pole change later this evening in Truro, so power outages may be experienced while doing this work.”
