Diocese of Fall River’s New Academy Hires New STEM Education Director

FALL RIVER–The Diocese of Fall River’s Catholic School Superintendent Steve Perla announced earlier this summer that Ellen Russell is the new Academy Director of STEM Education.

Russell is a lifelong science and robotics expert, and will help develop STEM cirriculum for both Bishop Connolly and Coyle and Cassidy High Schools while also teaching students in grades 1 through 4.

“It’s something that I love to do, it’s something I’ve spent my career doing, and so this position was taylor made for me,” Russell said.

The demand for STEM jobs in the United States has grown over the years, and Russell plans to prepare students for the future.

“They need to be able to work together,” Russell continued.

“They need to be able to recognize someone else’s talents as part of a problem solving team…Just real life applications of their knowledge, rather than sitting in a classroom and learning one thing after another. They need to stop and see why it’s important.”
