Effort to Move Gay Head Light Underway

AQUINNAHAQUINNAH –  The historic Aquinnah Lighthouse, an aid to navigation for generations of mariners off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, is in danger of being lost to the sea due to erosion of the Aquinnah cliffs on which it sits.

An effort is underway to move the light back 140 feet to protect it from certain destruction.

Len Butler is heading the movement subcommittee of Save the Gay Head Light and says the move is difficult but not impossible given the right help.

“We have hired the International Chimney Corporation which specializes in moving tall slender structures and have moved four masonry lighthouses in the past, most recently the Sankaty Light on Nantucket.”

The organization has procured land to the south east of the light’s current position that is stable enough to protect  the light for decades, according to Butler.
