BOSTON – Eversource has started its semi-annual aerial inspections of the regional electric grid.

The company uses a helicopter to inspect high-voltage electric equipment on its rights-of-way across the region. The aircraft is outfitted with infrared scanning technology so workers can detect any equipment problems before they come up.

“We have several highly effective, year-round programs that focus on the inspection of our equipment across the Commonwealth,” said Eversource Regional Electric Operations President Craig Hallstrom. “We’re always working to serve our customers better, and these annual helicopter inspections of regional electricity lines are crucial to maintain reliable service for the hundreds-of-thousands of residents and businesses who depend on them every day”

The aerial inspections are starting north of Boston on Wednesday, before they move south and eventually onto Cape Cod later in the week.

The helicopter will be in the air from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and residents may see it hovering over transmission lines.
