HYANNIS – Eversource is reminding customers about effective ways to save energy and money while also staying safe this holiday season.
Customers are encouraged to inspect all lighted decorations for broken or cracked sockets and be sure that the lights that are being put outside are labeled for outdoor use.
“As important as energy efficiency is with holiday decorations is, safety is paramount,” said Eversource spokesman Mike Durand.
Eversource’s energy efficiency experts suggest using LED lights to replace older holiday decorations, as they last much longer and offer significant cost savings.
Eversource is also asking its customers to never run extension cords under rugs, use a programmable timer for lights, check extension cords, use advanced power strips where possible and turn off room lights when the tree is lit to save energy.
Durand said that people have to be vigilant and use their best judgement when decorating.
“One of the biggest tips for people who decorate outside is to be very aware of where the power lines are,” said Durand. “Don’t raise any type of object, whether it’s metal or otherwise, up near power lines.”
