Eversource Offers Energy-Saving and Safety Tips for Holidays

HYANNIS – The holiday season is here, and residents across Cape Cod will begin to decorate their homes with festive lights.

Eversource is advising people to be safe and save money.

Before putting them up, all lights should be checked to make sure they are not damaged or broken.

Specifically, people should be on the lookout for things such as cracked sockets, loose connections, and frayed wires. Outdoor lights should be labeled for outdoor use.

All decorations should be put up on a stable surface away from power lines or other hazards. Outdoor connections should be kept off the ground and plugged into GFCI outlets.

Extension cords should never be ran under rugs or coiled tightly, which could lead to overheating. All lights should be dampness and temperature-proof as an added layer of protection.

Timers should be programmed on lights to ensure they’re not left on accidentally, and room lights should be turned off while a tree or other holiday lights are lit, thus saving energy.

When possible, utilize advanced power strips to eliminate the risk of standby energy loss.
