HYANNIS – Seven Barnstable Town Councilors seats are up for election this fall.
And while incumbents have taken out nomination papers, there are few challengers.
Today is the last opportunity to take out papers to challenge the incumbents.
Tuesday, July 21, is the deadline to obtain papers from the Barnstable Town Clerk’s office for people who are considering running for a seat in Precinct 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13.
Candidates have another week after obtaining the papers, until July 28, to submit the nomination papers to the registrar of voters for certification.
Each candidate for town councilor needs 25 signatures.
Barnstable Town Councilor Ann B. Canedy of Precinct 1 in Barnstable Village has reached her term limit, so that seat is open without an incumbent. So far, only one person, John Flores, has taken out papers for that seat.
Only one of the councilors running for reelection has a challenger so far. James M. Tinsley in Precinct 9 in Hyannis has taken out papers for reelection. Joseph Bey Jr. has also taken out papers for the Precinct 9 seat.
There are no challengers so far for the remaining incumbents: Paul Hebert of Centerville in Precinct 3; James H. Crocker Jr. of Osterville, in Precinct 5; Town Council President Jessica Rapp-Grassetti of Cotuit, which is Precinct 7; Philip Wallace of West Barnstable in Precinct 11; and Jennifer L. Cullum of Hyannis in Precinct 13.
There are several other races that will appear on the town election ballot.
Maureen Niemi is seeking reelection for the town collector seat and has returned her papers.
Hilary Greene has returned papers for her seat on the Housing Authority. Deborah Converse has also taken out papers for reelection on the housing authority but has not returned the papers yet, according to Barnstable Town Clerk Ann Quirk.
Barnstable School Committee incumbents Christopher Joyce and R. Patrick Murphy are both seeking reelection.
